地下足袋(じかたび)

じかたび
noun
split-toe work shoes; jika-tabi
clothingwork
1. split-toe work shoes with rubber soles
Ankle-high cloth footwear with a separate big toe and a rubber sole, worn outdoors by construction workers, gardeners and farmers, and at festivals.
地下足袋(じかたび)を履(は)く。
To put on jika-tabi.
On festival day we carry the portable shrine wearing jika-tabi.
The carpenter, wearing jika-tabi, walked nimbly across the roof.

The 地下(じか) here means "directly (on the ground)": unlike ordinary 足袋(たび), which are worn indoors or inside sandals, these are worn on their own as shoes. Despite the kanji, it has nothing to do with 地下(ちか) (underground).
