Writing

The same word is written 断(た)つ when something is cut off or given up (酒(さけ)を断(た)つ, 退路(たいろ)を断(た)つ) and 絶(た)つ when something is ended for good (消息(しょうそく), 命(いのち), 縁(えん)). The line is blurry, and both spellings occur with 連絡(れんらく) and 関係(かんけい). 裁(た)つ (to cut cloth) is a different word.
