Used to describe hot weather or ambient temperature. For hot objects or drinks, use 熱い (atsui) with a different kanji.
暑くて眠れません。

Usage
暑い describes how hot it feels — the weather, a room, the season — not the temperature of a thing you touch. It is used both before a noun (暑い日) and as a predicate (今日は暑い). Because it describes a sensation, it takes no subject in the usual sense: 暑いです on its own means "it's hot" or "I'm hot," depending on context.
