A counter for small to medium-sized animals such as fish, insects, cats, dogs, etc. Not used for birds or rabbits.

猫(ねこ)を三(さん)匹(びき)飼(か)っています。

I have three cats.

一(いっ)匹(ぴき)の犬(いぬ)が走(はし)っています。

いっぴき with small っ and ぴ

庭(にわ)で蝶々(ちょうちょう)を五(ご)匹(ひき)見(み)ました。

I saw five butterflies in the garden.

匹(ひき) is used for small to medium animals (fish, insects, cats, dogs, etc.) but NOT for birds (羽(わ)) or large animals (頭(とう)). Pronunciation varies: 一(いっ)匹(ぴき), 二(に)匹(ひき), 三(さん)匹(びき), 六(ろっ)匹(ぴき), 八(はっ)匹(ぴき), 十(じゅっ)匹(ぴき). The consonant changes between ひき, ぴき, and びき.
