The number six. A straightforward number in Japanese with consistent pronunciation in most contexts.
I wake up at six o'clock.

Note: ろく becomes ろっ before ほん→ぽん
Six friends came, so we didn't have enough chairs.

(ろく) is the number six. The native Japanese counting word is (むっ)つ (muttsu).

SOUND CHANGES:

When combined with counters starting with h-sounds, ろく often becomes ろっ:

  • (ろっ)(ぽん) (roppon): six long objects
  • (ろっ)(ぴゃく) (roppyaku): 600
  • (ろっ)(ぴき) (roppiki): six animals

NO CHANGE:

  • (ろく)() (rokuji): six o'clock
  • (ろく)(にん) (rokunin): six people
