一帯(いったい) refers to a broad, continuous stretch of land or geographical area. It often follows a place name or location word to mean "the whole area around ~."

COMMON PATTERNS:

  • この一帯(いったい): this (whole) area
  • 海岸(かいがん)一帯(いったい): the entire coastal area
  • (えき)周辺(しゅうへん)一帯(いったい): the whole area around the station
  • 一帯(いったい)(ひろ)がる: to spread across the area

HOMOPHONE NOTE:
Different from 一体(いったい) (what on earth; one body) — same reading but different kanji and completely different meaning. 一帯(いったい) is always geographical.
