1. to hit, to apply

To make something hit a target; to apply something to.

的(まと)に当(あ)てる。

To hit the target.

光(ひかり)を当(あ)てる。

To shine light on.

ボールを壁(かべ)に当(あ)てて遊(あそ)んだ。

2. to guess correctly

To get the right answer; to correctly identify.

答(こた)えを当(あ)ててください。

Please guess the answer.

犯人(はんにん)を当(あ)ててみてください。

Try to guess who the culprit is.

彼女(かのじょ)は私(わたし)の誕生日(たんじょうび)をぴったり当(あ)てた。

She guessed my birthday exactly right.

当(あ)てる is a transitive ichidan verb with two core meanings: physically hitting a target, and correctly guessing.
