Etymology

A frog living at the bottom of a well can only see a small circle of sky above and thinks that is the entire world. The proverb criticizes people with limited experience who don't realize how much they don't know.

The complete proverb is 井(い)の中(なか)の蛙(かわず)大海(たいかい)を知(し)らず (a frog in a well doesn't know the ocean).

COMMON EXPRESSIONS (extended version):
