A hand tool used to smooth and flatten wood surfaces by shaving thin layers. The traditional Japanese plane (和(わ)かんな) is pulled toward the user, unlike Western planes which are pushed.
かんなで板(いた)の表面(ひょうめん)を滑(なめ)らかにする。
I smooth the board's surface with a plane.
職人(しょくにん)がかんなを引(ひ)くと薄(うす)い削(けず)り屑(くず)が出(で)る。
