Types

Many rock subgenres are used in Japanese:

• ハードロック (hard rock)
• パンクロック (punk rock)
• オルタナティブロック (alternative rock)
• プログレッシブロック (progressive rock)

Cultural note

J-ロック or Jロック refers to Japanese rock music, which has a distinct style and large following.

Usage

ロック is written the same way for three unrelated meanings: rock music, a drink served "on the rocks," and "to lock" (ドアをロックする). Context makes the meaning clear. Said alone at a bar (without a drink name), ロック usually means a spirit served straight over ice, as opposed to being cut with hot water.
