Writing

溶(と)かす is the general spelling, for dissolving and for melting by heat. 解(と)かす is used for snow and ice (雪(ゆき)を解(と)かす), and 融(と)かす sometimes for metal or snow. Thawing frozen food is 解凍(かいとう)する.

Watch out

Combing hair is also とかす (髪(かみ)をとかす, written 梳(と)かす), an unrelated verb.
