A particular setting or operational state of a device, system, or software. Also used figuratively for a person's mental state or mindset.

From French 'mode,' referring to fashionable style or high fashion. Less common than sense 1 in everyday usage.

あの雑誌は最新のモードを紹介している。
That magazine features the latest fashion.
TWO ORIGINS:
Sense 1 comes from English 'mode' (setting, state). Sense 2 comes from French 'mode' (fashion). In modern Japanese, sense 1 is far more common.
マナーモード:
A uniquely Japanese term (wasei-eigo) for silent/vibrate mode on phones. In English this would be 'silent mode' or 'vibrate mode.'
