1. faculty, department, school (within a university)
An academic division within a university organized by field of study, such as the Faculty of Law or the School of Engineering.
法学部(ほうがくぶ)に入学(にゅうがく)した。
I enrolled in the Faculty of Law.

Usage

Sense 1 is used in university names (e.g., 法学部(ほうがくぶ), 医学部(いがくぶ), 工学部(こうがくぶ)). Sense 2 distinguishes undergraduate from graduate level: 学部生(がくぶせい) (undergraduate student) vs. 大学院生(だいがくいんせい) (graduate student).
