The most famous set of 霊場(れいじょう) in Japan is the 四国八十八(しこくはちじゅうはち)か所(しょ)霊場(れいじょう) (88 Sacred Sites of Shikoku), a pilgrimage route associated with the monk 空海(くうかい) (弘法大師(こうぼうだいし)). Pilgrims who visit all 88 temples are called 遍路(へんろ).
