The smallest of Japan's four main islands, located south of Honshu across the Seto Inland Sea. Comprises the four prefectures of Tokushima, Kagawa, Ehime, and Kochi.

四国(しこく)は瀬戸内海(せとないかい)を挟(はさ)んで本州(ほんしゅう)と向(む)かい合(あ)っており、橋(はし)やフェリーで渡(わた)ることができる。

The name literally means "four countries/provinces" (四(し) = four, 国(こく) = country/province), referring to the four historical provinces: 阿波(あわ) (Tokushima), 讃岐(さぬき) (Kagawa), 伊予(いよ) (Ehime), and 土佐(とさ) (Kochi).

CULTURAL NOTE:
四国(しこく) is famous for the 八十八(はちじゅうはち)ヶ所(しょ)巡(めぐ)り (88 Temple Pilgrimage), a 1,200-kilometer walking route visiting 88 Buddhist temples associated with the monk 空海(くうかい) (弘法大師(こうぼうだいし)). This pilgrimage attracts thousands of walkers (遍路(へんろ)) each year.
