The name literally means "four countries/provinces" (() = four, (こく) = country/province), referring to the four historical provinces: 阿波(あわ) (Tokushima), 讃岐(さぬき) (Kagawa), 伊予(いよ) (Ehime), and 土佐(とさ) (Kochi).

CULTURAL NOTE:
四国(しこく) is famous for the 八十八(はちじゅうはち)(しょ)(めぐ)り (88 Temple Pilgrimage), a 1,200-kilometer walking route visiting 88 Buddhist temples associated with the monk 空海(くうかい) (弘法大師(こうぼうだいし)). This pilgrimage attracts thousands of walkers (遍路(へんろ)) each year.
