Seasoned pork that is braised or roasted, commonly served as a ramen topping or in rice bowls. Adapted from Chinese char siu.
Etymology
From Chinese 叉焼 (chāshāo). The Japanese version is typically braised in soy sauce and mirin rather than roasted with a sweet glaze as in Chinese cooking.
Usage
In Japan, チャーシュー most commonly refers to pork slices served on ramen. Many ramen shops offer extra チャーシュー as a topping. It is also served over rice as チャーシュー丼.
