To create something large-scale such as buildings, ships, or infrastructure. Used for construction and large-scale manufacturing, as opposed to 作る which covers general making and creation.
2.
to brew, to produce (alcohol, miso, etc.)
To produce fermented or brewed products such as sake, wine, beer, soy sauce, or miso. This is the standard kanji used for brewing and fermentation.
Kanji distinction
Japanese has three kanji for つくる, each with a different scope:
- 作る: general making, creating (food, art, documents, etc.) — the most common
- 造る: building, constructing, brewing — large-scale or industrial
- 創る: creating something new, founding — emphasizes originality
In practice, 作る can be used for almost anything, while 造る is specifically chosen for construction (造船, 建造) and brewing (醸造, 酒造).
