1. to create; to originate; to found
To bring into existence something that did not exist before — a work of art, a company, a culture, a new future. A kanji variant of (つく)る chosen when the writer wants to stress originality rather than manufacture.
To create a new culture.
My grandfather founded this company.
Rather than walking a path someone else decided, I want to create my own future myself.

Transitivity

Transitive; takes . There is no separate intransitive partner — use できる or ()まれる for the resulting state.

Writing

つくる has three common kanji, all read the same and all conjugating identically:

  • (つく): the default, for making things of any size
  • (つく): for building or brewing large or physical things — ships, houses, sake
  • (つく)る: for originating something new — a work, a company, an era

(つく)る is outside the standard 常用漢字(じょうようかんじ) readings, so official documents and textbooks normally write (つく) instead. It is common in slogans, mission statements, and company names.
