Attaches to the masu-stem (連用形(れんようけい)) of verbs:

The compound conjugates as a godan verb (終(お)わる).

～終(お)わる vs. ～終(お)える: ～終(お)える is transitive (the subject deliberately completes an action), while ～終(お)わる is intransitive (the action comes to completion). 読(よ)み終(お)えた emphasizes the reader's agency; 読(よ)み終(お)わった simply states that the reading is done.
～終(お)わる vs. ～上(あ)がる: ～上(あ)がる indicates completion with a nuance of something being finished and ready (出来(でき)上(あ)がる, to be completed/finished).
