だらけ
suffix
covered in ~; full of ~ (negative)
1. covered in ~; full of ~; riddled with ~
Attaches to nouns to indicate being covered in or full of something undesirable. Almost always carries a negative connotation. Functions as a no-adjective when modifying nouns.
()(どろ)だらけだ。

このレポートは間違(まちが)いだらけで()せない。
This report is full of mistakes, so I can't submit it.

FORMATION:

Attaches directly to nouns: noun + だらけ

  • (どろ)だらけ (covered in mud)
  • (きず)だらけ (covered in scratches)
  • 間違(まちが)いだらけ (full of mistakes)
  • ()だらけ (covered in blood)

When modifying a noun, use の: (きず)だらけの(くるま) (a car covered in scratches).

CONTRAST:

  • ~だらけ vs. ~まみれ: Both mean "covered in," but ~まみれ is limited to physical substances (()まみれ, (あせ)まみれ) and cannot be used with abstract nouns. ~だらけ works with both physical and abstract things (間違(まちが)いだらけ, 借金(しゃっきん)だらけ).
  • ~だらけ vs. ~ばかり: ~ばかり means "nothing but" without the negative nuance. ~だらけ always implies the situation is undesirable.

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • (きず)だらけ (covered in scratches/wounds)
  • (ほこり)だらけ (covered in dust)
  • (うそ)だらけ (full of lies)
  • 借金(しゃっきん)だらけ (riddled with debt)
