A checkbox or dropdown label meaning that a given item, rule, or category does not apply to the person or case in question. Common on government forms, applications, and legal documents as the opposite of 該当 (applicable).
Composed of the negative prefix 不 (non-) and 該当 (applicability; falling under). Pronounced ふがいとう, not ふがいとう with a nasal — treat it as a simple compound.
Usage
A bureaucratic form-filling word. You will see it printed next to a checkbox or as a dropdown option on application forms, visa paperwork, tax forms, export-control documents, and insurance forms. In casual speech, people say 当てはまらない or 関係ない instead. The word itself is rarely used as a predicate in free prose; when it is, it takes だ or である: この項目は不該当である ("this item is not applicable").
