1.
pundit; commentator; skilled debater; opinion-maker
A person known for publicly putting forward strong, clearly reasoned opinions on political, social, or cultural issues. A 論客 is someone whom others recognize as articulate and hard to argue against — whether a newspaper columnist, a TV commentator, or an active participant in academic debate. The term is mildly honorific in tone but can be used with a touch of irony when the person is overly fond of arguing.
有名な論客。
A well-known pundit.
保守派の論客として知られている。
He is known as a commentator on the conservative side.
番組には各分野の論客が集まり、白熱した議論が展開された。
Pundits from various fields gathered on the show, and a heated debate unfolded.
彼は若手ながら、経済政策について政府を鋭く批判する論客として注目されている。
Although young, he has drawn attention as a commentator who sharply criticizes the government's economic policy.
Compound of 論 ('argument; discourse') and 客 (here in the classical sense of 'person; fellow', as in 刺客 'assassin' or 剣客 'swordsman'). So literally 'a person of argument'. Despite the kanji 客 normally meaning 'guest', it does not mean a 'guest debater' in this word.
USAGE:
- Refers to a public figure, not an ordinary person who enjoys arguing. For that nuance use {口の立つ人|} ('someone good with words') or 議論好き ('one who likes to argue').
- Typically modified by adjectives or qualifying phrases: 有力な論客 ('influential pundit'), 若手の論客 ('young commentator'), 保守派の論客 ('conservative commentator').
- Often appears in TV, newspaper, and magazine contexts; less common in ordinary conversation.
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 有力な論客: influential pundit
- 若手論客: young commentator
- 保守派論客 / {リベラル|}論客: conservative / liberal pundit
- 論客が集まる: pundits gather
- 論客として知られる: to be known as a commentator
- 論客{ぞろい|}: a gathering full of sharp debaters
SIMILAR WORDS:
- 評論家: critic; commentator — a formal professional title; many 評論家 are also 論客.
- コメンテーター: (TV) commentator — the loanword, neutral in tone.
- オピニオンリーダー: opinion leader — emphasizes influence, not debating skill.
- 論者: proponent; advocate (of a specific view) — more limited; often 'one who argues for X'.
REGISTER:
A slightly literary/journalistic word. Using it in casual speech about a friend (e.g. 彼は論客だ) tends to sound half-joking — praising or teasing them for being argumentative.
