A formal and somewhat literary word for students or scholars. Most strongly associated with the historical term 学徒動員 (student mobilization), the wartime policy that put students to work in factories and on farms during World War II.

学徒動員 (1943-1945) was a wartime labour policy that sent middle-school, higher-school and university students to work in factories. Sending students into the armed forces was a separate policy, 学徒出陣 (from 1943). It remains a significant topic in Japanese war history and is frequently referenced in historical discussions and memorials.
