(とお)

とお
number
ten (native count); ten years old
1. ten (in the native Japanese count)
The native Japanese word for ten, the final element in the (ひと)つ, (ふた)つ, (みっ)つ ... (とお) counting sequence. This series stops at ten; from eleven onward, Japanese uses the Sino-Japanese system (十一(じゅういち)).
りんごを(とお)(かぞ)える。
Count out ten apples.
息子(むすこ)(とお)になった。
My son turned ten.
(ひと)つ、(ふた)つと(かぞ)えていって、(とお)でちょうど(はこ)がいっぱいになった。
Counting one, two, and so on, the box was exactly full at ten.

Last word in the native counting sequence: (ひと)つ, (ふた)つ, (みっ)つ, (よっ)つ, (いつ)つ, (むっ)つ, (なな)つ, (やっ)つ, (ここの)つ, (とお). Notice that (とお) alone takes no つ suffix.

USAGE:

  • For general items, especially with no special counter: ringo o (とお)
  • For age: (とお)になる ("turn ten") is a slightly literary alternative to 十歳(じゅっさい)
  • After ten, switch to the Sino-Japanese system: 十一(じゅういち), 十二(じゅうに), etc.

SIMILAR WORDS:

  • (じゅう): ten (Sino-Japanese) — used with most counters (十冊(じゅっさつ), 十人(じゅうにん))
  • 十歳(じゅっさい): ten years old — standard expression for age
