1.
one's last moments; death; dying hour
The moment of a person's death, and the circumstances surrounding it. Used only of living beings and, by extension, of organizations or eras being spoken of as if they died.
立派な最期だった。
It was an admirable death.
Homophone of 最後 (the last one, the end) but not interchangeable: 最期 is only about the end of a life. Writing ✗最後を看取る for a deathbed is a common kanji mistake.
Common collocations
- 最期を看取る: to be with someone when they die
- 最期を遂げる: to meet one's end (in a particular way)
- 最期の言葉: last words
- 悲惨な最期: a tragic end
