Said of care, attention, or management that extends to every corner of something. Most often used in the ている form to describe a place, service, or piece of work as impeccably tended.
掃除が行き届いている。
The cleaning has been done thoroughly.
この旅館はサービスが行き届いている。
The service at this inn is attentive in every detail.
手入れの行き届いた庭を見ると気持ちがいい。
It feels good to look at a well-tended garden.
生徒の数が多すぎて、一人ひとりに指導が行き届かない。
There are too many students, so instruction cannot reach every one of them.
A compound of 行く (to go) + 届く (to reach). The subject is the care or attention itself, marked with が, not the person providing it.
ASPECT:
The plain form is rare in the present tense. The normal affirmative use is 行き届いている (is thorough, is well looked after), a resulting state, while the negative 行き届かない points out where care is falling short.
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 掃除が行き届いている: is spotlessly clean
- サービスが行き届いている: the service is attentive
- 手入れの行き届いた: well-tended (as a modifier)
- 目が行き届く: to keep an eye on everything
TRANSITIVITY:
Intransitive. It takes no direct object; the area covered is marked with に (すみずみ}に{行き届く, to reach every corner).
