noun
hitting the nail on the head; a guess that is exactly right
communicationidiom
1. hitting the nail on the head; guessing exactly right
A remark or guess that lands precisely on the truth — usually one the other person was hoping to hide. Originally the black bull's-eye of an archery target. Nearly always used in the fixed phrases 図星(ずぼし)だ and 図星(ずぼし)()す.
図星(ずぼし)でしょう。
I'm right, aren't I?
They hit the nail on the head and I couldn't say a thing.
(だま)ってしまったところ()どうやら図星(ずぼし)だったらしい。
Judging by how she went quiet, it seems I'd guessed right.
When they asked if I was tired, they were exactly right, so I gave a wry smile.

Common expressions

  • 図星(ずぼし)だ: that's exactly right (usually said of someone else's guess about you)
  • 図星(ずぼし)(): to hit the nail on the head
  • 図星(ずぼし)()される: to be seen right through

Usage

The word carries a sense of being caught out, so it usually appears where the truth was inconvenient — an evasion detected, a feeling one was hiding. Saying 図星(ずぼし)だ about oneself is a light-hearted admission. From archery: the 図星(ずぼし) was the mark at the center of the target.

Similar words

  • その(とお): exactly so — plain agreement, with none of the caught-out nuance
  • ()たり: a hit, correct — used for quizzes and guesses generally, without the sense of exposure
