1. to click; to ring a bell; to strike one as right
Of an idea, name or thing: to be grasped or recognized in a flash, or to feel right at once. Very common in the negative ピンとこない, "it doesn't click, I can't really picture it". Also written ピンと来(く)る.
その名前(なまえ)、ピンとこない。
That name doesn't ring a bell.
As soon as I heard the explanation, it clicked.
I've seen lots of apartments, but I just can't find one that feels right.

Built from the mimetic ピンと (taut, with a sudden twang) and 来(く)る. The subject is the thing that clicks, not the person: 話(はなし)がピンとこない, "the story doesn't click (for me)". Casual to neutral; in formal writing use 理解(りかい)できない or 実感(じっかん)がわかない.

Common expressions

  • ピンとこない: it doesn't click; I can't quite picture it
  • ピンとくるものがある: something strikes a chord
  • 一目(ひとめ)でピンときた: I knew at a glance
