1.
to commute, to go back and forth
To travel regularly between two places, especially for work or school.
2.
to attend regularly
To go to a place regularly for lessons, treatment, or other purposes.
Transitivity: 自動詞 (intransitive). Pattern: Xに通う (commute to X, attend X regularly). Xへ also occurs and is slightly more formal.
Aspect: ている is the normal form for describing a current routine. 通っている means 'I commute / I attend' as an ongoing habit, not 'I am on my way'. To say you are on your way somewhere right now, use 行く instead.
Common patterns
- 会社に通う: commute to work
- 学校に通う: go to school
- 病院に通う: go to the hospital for ongoing treatment
- 塾に通う: attend cram school
- 通い: the noun form, as in 通いの道 (the route one takes regularly)
Similar words
- 行く: plain 'go', a single trip or a general statement. 通う adds that the trip repeats, in both directions, over a stretch of time. 学校に行く can be about today; 学校に通う says you are enrolled there.
- 通勤する: commuting to work specifically, and more formal — the word used on forms and in HR documents
- 通学する: commuting to school specifically, likewise more formal
Register: Neutral and very common in ordinary conversation. Where 通勤 and 通学 are nouns tied to one destination type, 通う is the general-purpose verb and works for gyms, clinics, lessons, and workplaces alike.
