1.
charging (battery)
The process of restoring electrical energy to a battery.
2.
recharging (figurative)
Figuratively, resting and recovering one's energy.
Compound: 充 (fill) + 電 (electricity)
Usage
- 充電する takes the device or battery as its object with を: スマホを充電する.
- The noun also names the stored charge itself, not just the act of charging. That is why it appears with が in 充電が切れる ("the battery dies") and 充電が少ない ("the charge is low"). Learners who read 充電 only as "charging" find these puzzling.
- 充電中 labels the ongoing state, as on a device screen.
- Sense 2 applies the battery image to a person. Here there is no を object — you simply 充電する, and the implied thing being charged is yourself.
- 充電期間 (recharging period) — time off to rest and recover. Often used of a performer or athlete on hiatus, where it is a softer way of saying they have stopped working.
- The figurative sense is casual and positive; it is not used of recovering from illness, which takes 回復 instead.
