A distinct period or level in a process, development, or series of events.
段階 refers to a distinct level or phase within a process, development, or sequence. Composed of 段 (step, level) + 階 (tier, story).
COMMON EXPRESSIONS:
- 段階を踏む: to go step by step, to follow the proper stages
- 最終段階: final stage
- 初期段階: initial stage
- 次の段階: next phase
- 現段階では: at the current stage
- 段階的に: gradually, in stages
USAGE:
Often used with に to describe when in a process something occurs: この段階で判断するのは早い (it's too early to judge at this stage). Also used as a modifier: 段階的な導入 (phased introduction).
