1. understanding, comprehension, consent
Understanding and accepting something; giving one's agreement or acknowledgment.
了解(りょうかい)を得(え)る。
To obtain consent.
上司(じょうし)の了解(りょうかい)を得(え)てから進(すす)める。
I'll proceed after getting my supervisor's approval.
本人(ほんにん)の了解(りょうかい)なしに写真(しゃしん)を使(つか)ってはいけない。

An acknowledgment that a message has been received and understood, commonly used in professional/military contexts.

メールで「了解(りょうかい)しました」と返事(へんじ)したが、上司(じょうし)には「承知(しょうち)しました」の方(ほう)がいいと言(い)われた。
I replied "understood" in an email, but my boss told me it's better to use the more formal expression.
承知(しょうち)しました is considered more appropriate when speaking to superiors.

Usage

Sense 1 is an ordinary noun: the consent or approval of a person who has authority over the matter. It is what you 了解(りょうかい)を得(え)る (obtain) before acting.

Sense 2 is the one-word reply "understood / got it", heard in workplaces, on radio, and in messaging apps. As a reply it is a complete utterance on its own.

Politeness levels

Replies of acknowledgment form a clear ladder, and choosing the wrong rung is a common learner mistake:

  • 了解(りょうかい) - bare, plain; between colleagues and friends, or to a subordinate
  • 了解(りょうかい)です - lightly polite; the everyday chat and messaging form
  • 了解(りょうかい)しました - polite, but see the caution below
  • 承知(しょうち)しました - humble; the safe choice toward a superior or a customer
  • かしこまりました - the most deferential; service-industry standard

Watch out

了解(りょうかい) is not itself a humble word. Many Japanese workplaces treat even 了解(りょうかい)しました as too casual toward a superior or a client, and expect 承知(しょうち)しました instead. The rule is not universal - some companies find it fussy - but a learner is safer defaulting to 承知(しょうち)しました upward and keeping 了解(りょうかい) for peers.
