Borrowed from English "pick up." The selection/featuring sense is the more common usage in Japanese media and marketing.

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • ピックアップする (to pick out, to highlight)
  • ピックアップ商品(しょうひん) (featured product)
  • ピックアップ記事(きじ) (featured article)
  • ピックアップトラック (pickup truck)

USAGE NOTES:
In Japanese, the "selection/featuring" sense is used more frequently than in English. Websites, shops, and media regularly use ピックアップ to mean "selected recommendations" or "editor's picks." The physical "pick someone up" sense is also common but less dominant.
