USAGE:
Often abbreviated in compound names: 漢検 (kanji proficiency test), 英検 (English proficiency test). The word 検定 by itself often implies a proficiency test that one can study for and take at scheduled intervals. Distinct from 試験, which is a broader term for any exam.
