USAGE:
Often abbreviated in compound names: 漢検(かんけん) (kanji proficiency test), 英検(えいけん) (English proficiency test). The word 検定(けんてい) by itself often implies a proficiency test that one can study for and take at scheduled intervals. Distinct from 試験(しけん), which is a broader term for any exam.
