コレステロール

From English/German "cholesterol." A fatty substance in the blood; high levels are associated with cardiovascular disease. Commonly discussed in health checkups (健康診断(けんこうしんだん)).

Two main types

• 善玉(ぜんだま)コレステロール: HDL, "good" cholesterol
• 悪玉(あくだま)コレステロール: LDL, "bad" cholesterol

Common collocations

• コレステロールが高(たか)い: to have high cholesterol
• コレステロールを下(さ)げる: to lower cholesterol
• コレステロールが多(おお)い: high in cholesterol (of foods)
