This discovery is said to be worthy of a Nobel Prize.
The kanji 値 has two main readings: あたい (this entry) and ね (see entry 03527). The reading あたい is used for abstract/technical values and the "worth" meaning, while ね is used for prices of goods (値段, 値上げ).
