To present an opposing argument or objection in response to someone else's statement or claim. Implies a structured or reasoned response, not merely emotional disagreement.

At the press conference, the president refuted the report's content while presenting data.
USAGE:
Often used with に対して to mark what is being argued against. The noun form 反論 is also very common (e.g., 反論がある 'there is an objection').
