Verb usage

As a suru-verb, 報道(ほうどう)する takes the event or facts reported as its object, and the passive 報道(ほうどう)される is far more common in ordinary sentences than the active — Japanese news writing normally reports what "was reported" rather than naming the outlet as the subject.

Register

報道(ほうどう) is a formal, institutional word. It refers to news put out by an organized outlet; you would not use it for personal news you pass on to a friend. For that, use ニュース or simply 話(はなし).
