To carefully think about or investigate something before making a decision. Frequently used in business and formal contexts, and sometimes used as a polite way to postpone or decline a request.
Usage
One of the most common business Japanese words. In practice, 検討します is often used as a polite way to avoid saying no directly. When someone says 検討します in response to a request, it can mean genuine consideration, but it can also be a soft refusal.
Common collocations
- 検討する余地がある (there is room for consideration)
- 前向きに検討する (to consider positively)
- 慎重に検討する (to consider carefully)
- 検討結果 (result of the review)
- 検討中 (under consideration)
Note for learners
Be aware that 検討します does not always mean the matter will truly be considered. In business, it is often a diplomatic way to decline without saying no.
