1.
single-sex education; sex-segregated schooling
An educational system in which boys and girls attend separate schools or classes.
A compound of 男女 (men and women), 別 (separate), and 学 (study/schooling). While most Japanese public schools are coeducational, some prefectures (notably Saitama, Gunma, and Tochigi) still have single-sex public high schools, and many private schools remain single-sex.
The opposite is 男女共学 (coeducation), often shortened to 共学.
