A compound of 男女(だんじょ) (men and women), (べつ) (separate), and (がく) (study/schooling). While most Japanese public schools are coeducational, some prefectures (notably Saitama, Gunma, and Tochigi) still have single-sex public high schools, and many private schools remain single-sex.
