The part of speech covering words such as ああ, おい, and はい, which stand alone and express feeling, call to someone, or answer. One of the categories used in Japanese school grammar.

「ああ」は感動詞(かんどうし)だ。

"Aa" is an interjection.

感動詞(かんどうし)は一語(いちご)で文(ぶん)になることがある。

An interjection can form a sentence all by itself.

感動詞(かんどうし)は活用(かつよう)せず、ほかの語(ご)を修飾(しゅうしょく)することもない。

Interjections do not conjugate, nor do they modify other words.

A term from Japanese school grammar. Also called 間投詞(かんとうし), which is the label more usual in linguistics and in dictionaries of European languages.
