1. noisy; loud; clamorous
Unpleasantly loud, whether the source is machinery, traffic, or people talking. Stronger and more negative than うるさい is in its mildest uses, and often has a note of complaint.
(そと)やかましい。
It's noisy outside.
The construction noise is so loud I can't sleep.
The TV in the next room was so loud that I had them turn it down a little.
2. fussy; particular; strict (about something)
Demanding and hard to satisfy about a particular matter, marked with に. Applied to people who insist on high standards, and to rules or inspections that are strictly enforced.
My father is strict about manners.
The owner of this shop is said to be particular about ingredients.
Recently the rules about handling personal information have become stricter.

Sometimes written (やか)しい, but kana is far more usual. As a one-word rebuke, やかましい! means "Quiet!" or "Shut up!" and is distinctly rough.
