Formed from 長(ちょう) (long) + 文(ぶん) (text, sentence). Two settings dominate: exam and study material (長文読解(ちょうぶんどっかい), long-passage comprehension), and messaging, where apologizing for a 長文(ちょうぶん) is a set courtesy.
