A black variety of soybean, and by extension the glossy sweet-simmered beans made from it that appear in every osechi box at New Year. Also sold roasted and as tea.
One of the 祝い肴, the core celebratory dishes of osechi. The bean is eaten as a wordplay wish: まめ also means "healthy, diligent," so the dish stands for a year of good health and hard work.
