The ordinary, polite-enough way to refer to a woman in everyday speech, especially one whose name you do not know.

あの女(おんな)の人(ひと)は誰(だれ)ですか。

Who is that woman?

Please ask the woman at the reception desk.

A woman I didn't know asked me the way at the station.

The counterpart of 男(おとこ)の人(ひと) (man). It is what a speaker says in conversation when pointing someone out or describing a person.

女性(じょせい): woman, female — more formal; used in writing, news and on signs
女(おんな)の方(かた): lady — more polite, used about a customer or a stranger in a respectful setting
女(おんな): woman — blunt; said about a particular person it can sound rude or contemptuous
女(おんな)の子(こ): girl; in casual speech also a young woman
