- 上京 is going to Tokyo from elsewhere in Japan, usually to live, study, or work there, and it carries a sense of coming up to the capital. It is not used for going to Tokyo from abroad, and it is used for either direction of view: a speaker in Tokyo says 上京してきた, one elsewhere says 上京した.
Etymology
- Literally "going up to the capital." It referred to Kyoto until the capital moved to Tokyo after the Meiji Restoration (1868).
