1. outrageous, absurd, unthinkable

Describes something unexpected, unreasonable, or beyond normal bounds. Can express shock or disbelief.

2. not at all, no way, absolutely not

Used as a humble denial or to strongly reject praise or thanks. A polite way to say 'don't mention it' or 'not at all'.

When someone thanks you or praises you, とんでもない is a humble way to deflect:
