1. to come true; to be fulfilled; to be realized

For a wish, dream, or hope to become reality.

夢(ゆめ)が叶(かな)った。

2. to match; to be equal to

To be a match for someone in ability (often used in negative).

彼(かれ)には敵(かな)わない。

I'm no match for him.

先生(せんせい)にはとても敵(かな)わない。

I can't compare to the teacher at all.

料理(りょうり)の腕(うで)では母(はは)には敵(かな)わない。

When it comes to cooking skills, I'm no match for my mother.

力(ちから)では敵(かな)わないが、知恵(ちえ)では負(ま)けない。

I can't match them in strength, but I won't lose in wits.

経験(けいけん)では先輩(せんぱい)に敵(かな)わないが、熱意(ねつい)なら負(ま)けない。

叶(かな)う has two distinct meanings: (1) for wishes/dreams to come true, and (2) to be a match for someone (usually negative).
