1. right?, isn't it?
A compound sentence-final particle combining よ (assertion) and ね (agreement-seeking), used to seek confirmation while softly asserting something.
Tomorrow is Sunday, right?
We've been to this shop before, haven't we?
She's beautiful, don't you think?
This is too expensive, isn't it?

COMPOSITION: よ (assertion) + ね (agreement-seeking)

  • よ alone: "I'm telling you" (informing)
  • ね alone: "isn't it?" (pure agreement)
I think X, don't you agree?"

NUANCE: Softer than よ alone. The speaker:

  • Believes something to be true
  • Wants confirmation or agreement
  • Leaves room for the listener to disagree

COMMON USES:

(The appointment is at 3, right?)
(Nice weather, isn't it?)
(No way, this is expensive, right?)

VS.

  • でしょう: slightly more formal, can be used for predictions

INTONATION:

  • Rising: genuinely seeking confirmation
  • Flat/falling: rhetorical, expecting agreement
