しかしながら

Register: Formal and mainly written. Common in business correspondence, academic papers, formal speeches, news commentary, and official statements.

Etymology: しかし (however) + ながら (while, though). The ながら adds weight, making it stronger and stiffer than plain しかし.

FORMALITY SCALE ("however"):

• でも — casual
• けど / けれど — casual to neutral
• しかし — formal
• しかしながら — very formal
• ただし — formal, but adds a condition rather than a contrast

Nuance: Reserved for important contrasts — delivering disappointing news politely, introducing a significant objection, or creating deliberate contrast in writing.

Common in business

• ご提案(ていあん)は魅力的(みりょくてき)です。しかしながら… (Your proposal is attractive. However…)

Avoid in casual speech: it sounds overly stiff. Use でも, けど, or ただ instead.
